Enterprises TV Examines Water Pollution in the U.S.

In the U.S., 40% of the rivers and 46% of the lakes are polluted, and unsafe for swimming or fishing. Fourteen pounds of garbage, mostly plastic, is dumped into the ocean every year.

Water Pollution and Its Dirty Affects

Water pollution is defined by the Business Dictionary as the presence in water of harmful or objectionable material in sufficient quantity to measurably degrade water quality. It harms plants, and all living species in the body of water. Enterprises TV notes that polluted water can harm the entire ecological system in its proximity also. Seventy percent of industrial waste is dumped into the water bodies and pollute the usable water supply. All living things need fresh water and water that is clean in order to survive.

Getting Clean Water

For most people in the U.S., getting clean water can be as simple as installing a water filter in refrigerator water dispensers or on kitchen faucets. City and county water departments are tasked with cleaning and maintaining a clean water supply residents use for cooking, bathing and quality of life. Every US state has environmental protection laws and policies that businesses and homeowners must follow. However, there are times when the system and its processes break down, and natural bodies of water become a toxic mess. This is when the citizenry steps up and makes raises attention about making the water clean.

What We Can Do

Use water filters at home. . Buy reusable water bottles and refill them with filtered water from home. (Not all water cooler companies have the same standards.) Speak up when local natural bodies of water become polluted. It’s your water too.

Enterprises TV Relays Environmental News

Commercial buildings are rarely built using Eco-friendly materials or designs. Yet, there are some that meet LEED-related guidelines, and some which go even further. Enterprises TV relays some good environmental news.

National Environmental News

The U.S. is four months away from the presidential campaign, and two months before the soon to be elected president takes office. No matter which candidate one votes for, President Barack Obama has implemented environmentally-friendly official guidelines which will be added permanently to the Federal Register shortly. The guidelines are categorized under climate change and its impact, and are noted to help federal agencies guide and propose action for affected communities. It is clear to almost everyone that the Earth is hotter, there is more drought, wildfires, and other catastrophic events stemming from climate change.

Northeast City and Regional News

The city of Pittsburgh, PA has always been one leading the way in commercial innovation. The new Frick Environment Center is a stunning example of how one city can sustainably build a center for the public to enjoy using materials that preserve and conserve the natural resources around it. Below are the stunning facts about the construction, materials and water use for the site that achieved net zero energy and water:

  • Building materials were used from no further than 1,200 miles away to reduce the carbon footprint of the site.
  • Ground-source heat pumps, radiant floors, photovoltaic array, and a reclaimed water system that captures and filters storm water for reuse in irrigation and non-potable uses.
  • Contractors and sub-contractors and trades people were hired from the county and region only.

Well done, Frick Environment Center and the City of Pittsburgh. That's what you are known for -- creativity, strategy, innovation.m

Enterprises TV Filters through Clean Air News

Clean air is essential to good health, strong respiratory systems, and necessary for life. Whether we are at home, at work, or outside, we need clean air. Enterprises TV filters through steps to obtain and maintain clean air in common places.

Keep indoor air clean from allergens

Home Indoor Air Quality

We spend 80 percent of our time every day indoors at home and work. It is also where we can improve the quality of the air we breathe. Some of the ways in which to do this are:

  • Regularly clean or replace air conditioner filters.
  • Inspect and clean A/C units inside for debris and fungus. Hire a professional to do this.
  • Inspect and maintain outside A/C units.
  • Replace household products which contain chemicals which products that are made with natural products. There are many brands sold that work great without chemicals.
  • If allergies to dust, mold and mites are common, find an affordable air purifier. These clean the air and remove the allergens to make breathing easier.

Business Indoor Air Quality

Clean indoor air is just as important to have in the workplace, as it is at home. Small offices and individually owned businesses will have better success at this as they are able to control all aspects of providing and maintaining clean air. Large office buildings are managed by maintenance companies and there is usually a process in place for air conditioning repair and maintenance. Enterprises TV suggests using an air purification product if the air a small office needs to be better filtered.

Clean indoor air keeps our lungs and respiratory systems functioning well, which in turn maintains our health.

The Enterprises TV Show Highlights the Best Places to Retire

Wyoming

Many retirees think of the warmer U.S. states in which to retire. However, some of them are overcrowded with “snowbirds”. The Enterprises TV show highlights the best places to retire. Some of them might be surprising.

People who are soon to retire and who live in colder climates might be tempted to relocate to warmer parts of the country. But many of these states, such as Florida and Georgia, are already pretty crowded with retirees.  Bankrate.com recently released their list of best places to retire. We share it to enlighten readers who are planning to end their work life soon.  Take a look and see if there is someplace on this list that might be a cool place to live, play and relax.

Wyoming – This big, wide-open state made the top of the list. It offers residents a low cost of living, low crime rate and light tax burden. It also has acres of open space to explore.  Natural beauty is in abundance, along with all the perks that go with it.

Colorado – What’s not to like about this great Western state?  It boasts a population which is more educated than some other states.  It also offers more outdoor recreational activities with its many mountains, rivers, parks, shopping centers, cultural events, and great places to dine out.

Utah – Utah is a friendly state.  It is also amazingly beautiful  in cities and in the mountainous areas.  Many retirees love this state for its mountains, rivers and outdoor recreation possibilities.

Idaho – Its affordable cost of living and affordable home prices are quite appealing to many retirees.

Virginia – The only state on the East Coast that made the top ten has four seasons that many people love.  It also has an abundance of historical and cultural events, and close access to Eastern seashores.

Iowa – This is a great state for military retirees because it does not tax military pensions. This, of course, annoys its neighbors who now feel they have to do the same.  There is also a lot to be said for living in the region of the country. It is beautiful state.

Montana – Enterprises TV was a bit surprised to see this state make the list, until we learned of its small- town charm, plethora of stunning landscapes and abundance of fishing spots.

South Dakota –The winters can be frigid, but the summers are mild.  Like Florida, it has no state income or inheritance tax.

Arizona – This warm weather state with dry heat is great for retirees with respiratory problems and arthritis as it eases symptoms for those who live with those ailments.  It also offers residents great golf courses, exquisite shopping and dining venues, and cultural events galore.

Nebraska – The air quality is great for everyone, and there is a good ratio of doctors to residents.
Find someplace on this list to explore?

The Enterprises TV Show Offers Another View on Retiring Early

There are some days (maybe even weeks) when the thought of retiring early sounds great. Workers in their early to late 50s may be tinkering with the idea of stopping work soon. While many financial planners urge their clients to keep working until there is enough money is saved, there are some valid reasons to retire from a long career, which the Enterprises TVshow explains.

Middle-aged employees are let go from their jobs for any number of reasons. This can be seen as a blessing in disguise. Early retirement can be beneficial to someone who is discharged from their job.  Reduced work hours and work from home jobs are perfect for someone who is close to retirement age and finds them selves suddenly out of work.

Workers find they need to leave the work force early to care for very elderly parents. This is another common scenario for many Boomers. Retiring early may be needed in order to fully step in and care for older parents. Some employers will allow these staff members to work reduced hours and off-site. This can be a nice break. It gives the worker as caretaker a break from daily stress and adds some extra income to the household budget.

The Enterprises TV show understands there are perfectly valid reasons why some workers take early retirement.  Why not make a plan – both for dreams and finances – and determine how soon you can retirement from full-time work?

Enterprises TV Reviews the Cost of Healthcare for American Workers

The cost of healthcare is rising for many American workers this year. Enterprises TV reviews a few of the factors contributing to the rise in premiums.

A standard work week is usually 40 hours.  However, the Affordable Care Act mandates that the work week must be 30 hours so that more workers can be covered under employer paid health plans. Business owners back the Congressional bill Save the American Workers Act which keeps the full-time work week at 40 hours.  Hourly employees, especially those working in the retail, food and beverage and tourism industries might see more hours added to schedule. No matter which way the health laws might change, healthcare costs will rise. The Enterprises TV show predicts that payroll deductions will be higher and paychecks smaller due to the rising cost of premiums.

Business owners might want to evaluate other plans for better costs to them and their staff. Family members of military veterans can query organizations such as USAA and others for affordable healthcare plans. Salon workers should explore all options before choosing an affordable healthcare plan. Since those without insurance are financially penalized during tax time, it makes sense to be covered. There are some good resources if help is needed finding the best plan for personal needs.

The Enterprises TV Reviews the Benefits of Shift Work

A recent study found that people suffer from some brain loss when they work for more than a decade on differing shifts. Despite this news, the Enterprises TV show highlights the benefits of working the afternoon and night shifts.

Workers who spend eight hours per day working an afternoon or overnight shift learn to shuffle regular activities to suit their schedule. Errands can be run before work and while others are still at the office. Medical appointments can be scheduled with more ease. Grocery shopping can be done in less crowded stores. Banking can be accomplished. While the day shift workforce is commuting home, afternoon workers are already at their desks and night shift workers are preparing for the upcoming work time. Afternoon and night shift workers have less upper management to contend with because most have left for the day. Enterprises TV believes it takes time and practice to get used to these alternative work days and nights. Workers should plan when to go to bed to get eight hours of sleep. Darken the room and if needed, use an eye mask to block out any daylight for a sound rest. Eat a good meal before going to work and then lightly during it. The benefits of shift work are great once one gets used to the schedule.

Enterprises TV Shares Tips on How to Be Your Own Healthcare Advocate

Medical bills usually come soon after any treatment of office visit has occurred. Some come with billing errors and odd looking charges. In order to be sure they are accurate, The Enterprises TV show shares tips on how to be your own healthcare advocate.

Keep records of everything. This means keeping insurance paperwork, lab report bills, phone call logs and conversations with billing reps organized. Meticulous record keeping can help the patient keep track of what should be charged rather than what is charged.

If there is an odd looking charge or an erroneous charge, call the office of where the charge occurred. Ask for the billing person and question the fee. Write down the rep’s name, date and time of call, and what was discussed with any action taken.

Be knowledgeable. There are two very good resources which list the average costs for most medical procedures: Healthcare Bluebook and FAIR Health, Inc. Research the fees. Be armed with knowledge.

Don’t wait and think about calling for clarification. The longer one waits, the better chance the healthcare provider will report a late payment to the credit agencies or send the bill to collection. Pick up the phone and call.

Ask about payment options. Make payment arrangements if the bill is too high to pay all at once. Be firm in how much can be paid at one time. Don’t go broke trying to pay a medical bill because the billing department insists on it. The Enterprises TV show urges readers to call a healthcare advocate if needed.  No one has the right to force the patient to pay a hefty bill.

Enterprises TV with Flight Germ Misconception Insights

Wipe arm rests and seat tables with sanitary wipes
There are quite a few misconceptions about the germs and air quality on airplanes which Enterprises TV wishes to alleviate.

The air on the flight is re-circulated through HEPA filters and is continually being cleaned. So there is nothing bad about it. If one is really worried about germs, think about getting some sanitary wipes before traveling and using them on the real germ collection places: tray tables, arm rests, toilet handles, seat pockets and bathroom door handles. Many discount and drug stores sell travel sized packages of these wipes, which also fit in plastic baggies.

Pass on taking a free blanket and pillow. Instead, buy your own from a discount or drugs store. There are never enough pillows and blankets to go around in the first place, and many times these items are tossed in the overhead bins or on the dirty seats themselves. Take your own.

Think airplanes are cleaned after every flight? Garbage and old periodicals are collected and thrown out. But, the FAA only requires airlines to thoroughly wipe down an airplane once for every 30 days of service or at the 100 flying-hour intervals. That means that plane just boarded probably has not been cleaned well at all.

The Enterprises TV show urges readers to always be ready to decontaminate the common areas that we use on flights. It is a preventative measure against all germs and bacteria. And be sure to keep hands away from the eyes unless they are clean since the tear ducts are passageways to the body for contaminants. Be prepared to have a safe, relatively germ-free flight.

Enterprises TV on Guarding Your Social Security Number

Guard your SSN at all times

At some point soon, you will visit a doctor’s office and be asked for your Social Security Number. It is your choice if you want to give it. Enterprises TV reviews some establishments and situations where it giving a Social Security Number is optional – not mandatory.

It seems like there is new report about hacking and identity theft every week in the news. This naturally makes the public uneasy about using credit and debit cards or in giving their Social Security Number to any type of business or physician office. A person’s identity is their biggest asset. What happens if that identity is stolen by giving out the one unique identifier – the SSN? Instead of just jotting the full number down or repeating it for a clerk in the office, ask questions.

  • Who needs to know my SSN?
  • Why do you need my SSN?
  • Who will have access to my SSN?
  • What steps of protection does my SSN have in your database and in your paper filing system?
  • Who does this office share my personal information with?

The Enterprises TV show suggests a simple reply for those who ask for a SSN: Just say no. Or at the very least, offer the last four digits of the SSN. I did this once on a job application and was promptly told they needed the entire number. I declined to give it.  If the establishment insists on having your SSN, offer a drivers license number instead.

Below are some other places where no one in the office needs your SSN for any reason:
Any request for the SSN in email or on a phone call.
  • Public schools or events related to them.
  • Supermarkets
  • Store loyalty programs
  • Doctors’ offices

Never give your Social Security Number out without asking why it is needed. This number should be guarded by its owner at all times.

Enterprises TV and the Most Affordable Cities for Retirees

(Tampa, Florida)

Some cities are better for retirees than others because they are affordable, have great healthcare facilities and great weather. Enterprises TV shares the list of the top ten most affordable cities for retirees.

Not surprisingly, Florida has five of the ten cities for being great places for retired people. Texas has two cities, Arizona has two cities and Kansas has one. Below are how the top ten are ranked by WalletHub:

  1. Tampa. FL
  2. Grand Prairie, TX
  3. Orlando, FL
  4. St. Petersburg, FL
  5. Scottsdale, AZ
  6. Overland Park, KS
  7. Port St. Lucie, FL
  8. Cape Coral, FL
  9. Plano, TX
  10. Peoria, AZ

The survey considered several relevant criteria in determining the above ranking order: taxes, cost of living, cost of in-home care, change of securing a job in retirement, weather, crime, access to hiking, golfing, volunteer opportunities, clean air and water, and of course, availability of doctors, dentists and hospitals.

Florida is a popular state for retirees because of it low taxes and great weather. Texas is affordable and has the resources to hire older workers, Arizona has great weather, healthcare and activities. Kansas also provides plenty of jobs for retirees, is affordable and good healthcare is available when needed. There are many reasons why those who are close to retirement and who have quit working already choose to relocate. The Enterprises TV show suspects that having a more affordable cost of living is the most common reason.

Enterprises TV Reminds Older Readers to Stay Active

It seems like the older we get the less active we become. And sometimes after retirement, we slow down so much that it is hard to get started again. Enterprises TV reminds readers to stay active with a few helpful suggestions.

Move. Movement is essential to staying active. Get up and take walks, go dancing, play golf, or do any favorite physical activity. This keeps joints loose and not stiff, helps maintain balance and promotes endurance.

Read. Read the newspaper, magazines, books, e-books or anything else to keep the mind active. Take a class at a lifelong learning center found at many local colleges and universities. Try not to let the mind rest too long.

Learn. Learn something new. Enterprises TV believes we are never too old to learn something new. Learn how to play the piano, learn a new language, learn how to blog or anything else that one finds challenging and fun.

Socialize. Organize or join a book club. Plan a luncheon with friends. Meet new people at community events. Socializing is important to someone who lost their spouse. Invite singles out with everyone else. The key to staying active as we get older is to not stop doing what we love. Sure we may slow down a bit. But we can still be active everyday. Exercise mind and body for a longer and more fulfilling life.

Enterprises TV and How to Banish Stress

close your eyes and let stress float away

Stress can creep up on us or it can hit us like a ton of bricks. Enterprises TV shares how to banish stress every day.

If we change the way we think about stress, then we should be able to manage it every day. Let the small things fade away from memory. Don’t allow them to become major worries. Also, there are very few personal catastrophes. One small mishap at the office doesn’t equate to the world ending. Try not to turn an ant hill into a mountain. Before going to bed, practice a little mediation and focus attention on something positive – such as an upcoming vacation. Shove negative thoughts out of the mind. If they persist, create a mental image of a bulldozer physically moving the negative thought of sight.

Enterprises TV also suggests avoiding going online when stress is pressing. Social media accounts and news headlines can add to stress when we feel the need to reply to a post, or read the comments after a news story. Walk away from digital devices. Don’t answer calls or texts from people who persist in being negative. At the end of the day, before going to bed, take time to remember the positive events that occurred that day. Focus on those and drift into sleep with a smile instead of clenched fists.

Enterprises TV and How to Save for Financial Emergencies

Financial emergencies happen every day. They happen to everyone at some point in their lives. Twenty-six percent of American consumers do not have adequate savings to cover a financial emergency. Enterprises TV shares how to start socking away savings.

When work seems steady, the family vehicle is running well and all appears to be right with the world, we take for granted that we might need a financial cushion. This is the best time to start putting money into savings. We have found that even a modest amount saved monthly can help pull us through a financial hit. Make it easy to save: set up automatic funds transfer from a checking to savings account every month. Even fifty dollars put aside each month can be helpful when needed.  Review monthly expenses and put the money aside used for lunches out and daily coffee runs into savings.

A recent poll found that 25 million middle-class families live hand to mouth. Two thirds of us do not have the recommended savings to pull us through six months of a job loss. Enterprises TV finds that this is mostly due to stagnant pay and higher prices. Salaries have not budged for the average American worker in more than two years. Yet, the price of food and gas has risen. We find ourselves working harder and still not being able to save much. Take small steps when beginning to save for a rainy day. Go online and set up short term savings account and then transfer $50 to $100 into it today. Set an automatic transfer every month. After six months, there should be enough in it to help cover a major vehicle or medical expense or a portion of the mortgage or rent. Remember, every little bit saved is good.

Enterprises TV on Making the Work-Life Balance Better for Men

It is usually the women who are written about when it comes to a work-life balance. Between taking care of the kids and job responsibilities, women seem to be the most vocal. Enterprises TV takes a look at how men handle their everyday priorities.

While the balance of chores at home is becoming a little more even between men and women, men may feel like they aren’t doing enough, or are told they need to do more. This can lead to frustration and fighting. In that light, we want to offer tips on how to make it better for them.

Employers and colleagues need to know that men have families and need to be there for them. When they have to leave a little earlier to pick kids up, take one to the doctor or attend a special event, don’t give them grief about it.  Give them the time needed to do what they need to without making comments.

Couples can get together once week and go over the weekly calendar. Make it more fun with a glass of wine. Don’t get wrapped up in details. Talk about what didn’t work last week and how to make it work this week. Be careful to not assign blame when something doesn’t get done.

Turn technology off, guys. We know your boss expects you to be on call 24/7, but that is not realistic with a family and outside interests. Make time to tune out, go play sports with some buddies and do other man things. It’s okay to say no to some requests.

The Enterprises TV show suggests setting priorities for family and self. Everyone has their own favorite things to do. Work out what has to be done on Sunday and plan to set time aside for yourself during the week. Household chores can be split evenly. Validate each other’s needs and wants. And don’t forget to spend time with each other too.
